ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Education

  • We fought for, and won, construction of PS 340, PS 360, and PS 86 Annex, reducing the overcrowding problem at local schools.

  • KHNIA leaders successfully stopped the district plan to bus kindergarten and first graders from PS 86 Annex to schools several miles away.

  • PS 86 Education Committee now meets regularly with the principal and has secured numerous facility and organizational improvements.

Housing

  • We continue to build the base of our organization through tenant organizing. We work with Tenant Associations to hold landlords accountable, to get apartment and building repairs, to put pressure on different banks and mortgage holders to enforce repairs, to obtain inspections from the Department of Housing Preservation and Development (hpd), and to push for tenant initiated court cases to obtain repairs and/or to have a court-appointed administrator to manage buildings owned by problem landlords.

Safe Streets and Traffic

  • We hold regular community meetings with the 50th Precinct to work on community policing, obtain more beat officers, push for targeted police enforcement, and increase Cleans Halls Program patrolling.

  • Working with the Department of Transportation, we secured traffic lights and traffic calming devices in our neighborhood. We also attained more, and better, traffic enforcement.

Current Activities

We hold monthly community meetings with various city agencies such as the Department of Sanitation. These meetings also serve as a forum to identify community-wide issues and concerns. Community members are always welcome!
